The "Republican" card was selected first on Monday during a ballot position lottery to determine the order of the three established parties for the November election.

At 10:30 a.m., Cook County Clerk David Orr and Director of Elections Jan Kralovec folded three note cards -- one each for Democrat, Republican and Green Party -- and stuffed them into pill bottles. The pill bottles were dropped into a fish bowl, which Orr shook before Kralovec selected a bottle and revealed a card with "Republican" written upon it.

The drawing determined the Republican candidates will be first on the ballot. Democrats will be second, followed by Green Party candidates.

The ballot order will apply to all Chicago and suburban Cook County ballots. A ballot lottery is conducted prior to each general election to determine the order in which the established political parties will appear on the ballot.
