Cook County Clerk David Orr’s office will place additional election judges (poll workers) and voting equipment at three Evanston precincts that serve Northwestern University students in the November 2 presidential election.

“We want to make voting convenient for students and make sure polling place operations run smoothly on Election Day,” Orr said. “Adding more election judges and voting booths at these polling places will help alleviate delays where we expect high turnouts.”

Because of the large number of registrations in three precincts – Ward 1/Precinct 6 (Parkes Hall, 1870 Sheridan Road), Ward 4/Precinct 3 (Lake Street Church, 607 Lake St.) and Ward 7/Precinct 9 (Patten Gym, 2407 Sheridan Road) – the Clerk’s office will double the regular number of polling booths to 14 in each of those precincts and increase the number of election judges.

A surge of last-minute registrations and a high turnout contributed to long lines at Ward 1/Precinct 6 during the 2000 presidential election. After the election, the Clerk’s office worked with university officials and students to move precincts with a majority of student voters closer to campus.

Ward 1/Precinct 6 was moved from the Evanston Public Library, 1703 Orrington Ave., to Parkes Hall; Ward 7 Precinct 9 was moved from Seabury Western Theological Seminary, 616 Haven St., to the Patten Gym; and Ward 1/Precinct 1 was moved from the Rookward Gardens Coop, 700 Noyes St., to the Seabury Western Theological Seminary, 600 Haven St.

As a result of redistricting by Evanston officials during the summer, a new campus precinct was created. A portion of Ward 1/Precinct 6 became Ward 7/Precinct 10 that includes voters living on the southern end of campus. Voters in that precinct will vote at the Norris Center, 1999 Campus Drive.

The Clerk’s office is placing additional equipment and workers in precincts throughout suburban Cook County that have high numbers of registered voters.
