Chicago company of “Hamilton” teams up with Clerk’s Office for National Voter Registration Day

Cook County Clerk Karen A. Yarbrough on Tuesday joined the Chicago company of “Hamilton” to register voters and promote online voter registration on National Voter Registration Day.

A half-dozen members of the Chicago company of “Hamilton” joined Yarbrough and her staff at The CIBC Theatre between 11:00 a.m.– 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, urging those walking by the theater to check their voter registration status, and register to vote.

In the vestibule of the theater, Yarbrough’s staff and “Hamilton” company members checked the registration status of eligible voters and helped those who were not yet registered to vote do so on Clerk’s office laptop computers.

"'Hamilton' makes you think about your place in history. How do we make our mark? How do we make our time on this earth matter? The 2020 Presidential Election cycle will be historic," Yarbrough said. "But in order to be part of history, you must register, and vote. If you don't, someone else will write your story. In order to make democracy work, we must all participate, and that means register and vote."

Ebrin Stanley, who plays both Hercules Mulligan and James Madison in the Chicago production, also had a few words to say on National Voter Registration Day. “This is Hamilton’s third year participating in National Voter Registration Day in Chicago. We want to do our part to help all citizens rise up and make their voices heard,” Stanley said. “Voting honors what our country stands for as well as the democracy our Founding Fathers built.”

Voters who did not have time to register at the theater were given Voter Registration business cards with information on online registration, so they could complete their registration from their home, or even on their smartphones.

National Voter Registration Day is an annual nationwide effort to ensure no eligible voters are left behind on Election Day because they missed a registration deadline or did not know how or where to go to register. National Voter Registration Day is an opportunity for voters to put their differences aside and celebrate the rights that unite them as Americans; democracy.

“Hamilton” is the story of America's Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became George Washington's right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was the new nation’s first Treasury Secretary.

Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B, and Broadway, “Hamilton” is the story of America then, as told by America now.
