More than a year after the tragic police shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, the officer is facing charges, the dashcam video is available for all to see, and protesters peacefully took to the streets to voice their outrage. But what took so long? And why did our elected representatives prevent the truth from coming out and stall on taking action?

Public officials have to be held accountable for the actions of those they hire and employ, whether it’s a police officer who fires 16 bullets into a teenager or a public school CEO who steers multi-million dollar contracts to her cronies. It is unacceptable for the mayor, state's attorney and police superintendent to express their disappointment in the actions of one individual, and refuse to take further responsibility. We need more than that from our leaders. Laquan deserved better. And so does every child in every corner of this city.
