Shel Silverstein began writing poetry as a young boy, later saying he was grateful that he was not influenced by the “greats” of poetry at this time because it allowed him to develop his own style. In addition to writing poetry and lyrics, Silverstein was a cartoonist and composer. His collection of work remains popular with children today.
