Almost 100 stores participate in Grocery Day

Suburban Cook County shoppers can add registering to vote to their grocery lists this weekend as a convenient way to register before the Oct. 5 deadline, announced Cook County Clerk David Orr.
During Grocery Day on Saturday Oct. 2, the Clerk’s office will host registration at 96 Jewel-Osco and Dominick’s Finer Foods stores throughout suburban Cook County from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Grocery Day serves as a final big push by the Clerk’s office to register voters before the last day to register for the November 2 general election.
“We’re trying to make it easy for people with busy schedules to register to vote,” said Clerk David Orr, who started Grocery Day more than13 years ago to encourage more participation in elections. “It also enables us to bring voter registration to dozens of highly trafficked areas in our neighborhoods and communities.”
Grocery Day gives voters who have recently moved or changed their name a chance to register at their current address, Orr said. Voters can also learn how to verify their registration and confirm their polling place as part of the Clerk’s new “Election Protection” campaign.
Individuals registering to vote must present two forms of identification, including one that displays a current address (a bill addressed to the prospective voter will suffice as one valid ID).
To qualify to vote, an individual must be: a U.S. citizen; at least 18 years old by Election Day (November 2); and a resident of the same voting precinct at least 30 days prior to the election.
Voter registration continues through October 5 at the Clerk’s downtown Chicago office – at 69 W. Washington St. – and at the Clerk’s five offices located in suburban courthouses. Most local village and township halls offer voter registration, as well.
Mail-in registration applications are available on the Clerk’s elections website, www.voterinfonet.com, where individuals can download and print the form. All completed mail-in applications must be postmarked by the October 5 deadline.
