Orr announces voter registration figures for suburban Cook
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monday, October 18, 2004
Some of the highest suburban voter registration figures ever recorded may translate into a record turnout of voters casting ballots in the November election, Cook County Clerk David Orr announced today.
According to unofficial figures released by the Clerk’s office, there are 1,375,573 suburban residents who registered to vote by the October 5 registration deadline.
The registration total is second only to the record of 1.40 million for the presidential election of 1992, outpacing the 1.32 million registered voters for November 2000 and the 1.33 million for November 1996 (see below).
“Although this election’s registration figures don’t reach the record set in 1992, our voting lists are cleaner and more accurate than ever,” Orr said. “That translates into a higher percentage of actual eligible voters likely to show up to cast ballots on Election Day.”
The Clerk’s office completed a mail canvass this summer to update the voting list to account for former residents who have moved out of the county or died.
Despite the canvass, figures show increases in registration in almost all 30 suburban townships compared to four years ago.
The highest percentages of new registrations since the 2000 presidential election come from townships experiencing new development and residential growth: namely, Lemont (up 18.6 percent), Orland (up 13.4 percent), Rich (up 10.5 percent), and Hanover (up 9.7 percent).
