Candidate Statement

Michaela Nolan Ryan

Judge, Cook County Judicial Circuit (Vacancy of McCarthy), (Republican Party)

I ask voters to consider choosing me for this judicial office because, in addition to possessing the requisite qualities of integrity, impartiality and even temperament, I am independent. This is demonstrated by the fact that my campaign committee is not soliciting campaign contributions.  In addition, I work in the private sector, representing individuals and small businesses, and I think this type of experience is essential for someone who wants to be a judge.

If elected, my goals are to diligently adjudicate the cases before me in an effective, compassionate and respectful manner. I will render decisions that are in accord with the constitution and the laws of the State of Illinois. I will never “make law” like activist judges nor will I disregard the constitutional provisions upon which our state and country were founded.

For over 18 years, I have been a practicing attorney, starting out as an Illinois Assistant Attorney General defending the State of Illinois against workers compensation claims before the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission (formerly, the Illinois Industrial Commission). After a few years in public service, I entered the private sector where I have been for the last 15+ years. I practiced insurance coverage and defense law at Kerns, Frost & Pearlman, LLC for 5 ½ years. I am now a sole practitioner, managing my own general law practice. The areas in which I have practiced include workers’ compensation, insurance, real estate, traffic, personal injury, assault and mediation.

I am a lifelong resident of Cook County where I grew up as the oldest of 4 children. After graduating from New Trier East, I attended Georgetown University, majoring in Government and working on Capitol Hill. I then studied at IIT Chicago Kent College of Law where I earned my law degree while working as a clerk for a small law firm and, subsequently, for the Illinois Attorney General.

My husband and I have been married for 18 years, and we have 3 children. I enjoy volunteering at fundraisers for the teachers and the special education department at my kids’ grade school. I also enjoy participating in the annual fundraiser for the Winnetka Parks Foundation.

I appreciate this opportunity to tell voters about myself. I have established a Facebook page where I will post relevant information about my campaign.
