Candidate's Guide

Statement of Economic Interests

Any Statement of Economic Interests form provided by and filed with the Cook County Clerk's office discloses the information required by law and will meet the statutory filing requirement for candidates.

Candidates can print out the Statement of Economic Interests form below and deliver it to the Clerk's downtown office (69 W. Washington, Fifth Floor, Chicago, IL 60602) or any of the Clerk's suburban courthouse office locations (Rolling Meadows, Skokie, Bridgeview, Maywood and Markham).

Please complete the Candidate Contact Form and file with your nomination papers or email the form to colleen.gleason@cookcountyil.gov. Do NOT bind with the nomination papers.

Candidate Filing

For the March 20, 2018 Gubernatorial Primary Election: the candidate filing period for established political party candidates will take place Monday, November 27 - Monday, December 4

For the November 4, 2018 Gubernatorial Election: The candidate filing period for new political parties, independent candidates and sanitary district trustees will take place Monday, June 18 – Monday, June 27. 

Withdrawal of Candidacy

To withdraw your candidacy, please complete the Withdrawal of Candidacy form, have it notarized, and file it with the office where you submitted your original nominating petitions. If you filed your petitions with the Cook County Clerk's office, you should deliver or mail your form to the Clerk's downtown office: 69 W. Washington, Fifth Floor, Chicago, IL 60602. Emails and faxes are not accepted.


Important Dates for the March 20, 2018 Gubernatorial Primary Election

Candidate Filing Dates & Deadlines

Tuesday, September 5: First day to circulate petitions for established political party candidates

Monday, November 27 – Monday, December 4: Petition filing period for established political party candidates

Monday, December 11: Last day for filing objections to nomination papers of candidates who filed during the November 27 – December 3 filing period 
*Last day to withdraw for candidates who filed for incompatible offices

Wednesday, December 13: Last day to conduct lottery for ballot placement

Thursday, January 11: Last day to file withdrawal papers with the State Board of Elections

Wednesday, January 17: Last day to file withdrawal papers with the County Clerk

Thursday, January 18: Last day to file a notarized declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate (5:00 PM)


Referenda Question Deadlines

Monday, December 18: Last day for filing petitions for referenda for the submission of questions of public policy with the local election official

Tuesday, January 2: Last day for local governing boards to adopt a resolution or ordinance to allow a binding public question to appear on the ballot 


Certification of Ballot Deadlines

Thursday, January 11: Certification of Ballot by the State Board of Elections
*Certification of Ballot by local election authorities

Wednesday, January 17: Certification of Ballot to the City of Chicago


Voter Registration, Grace Period, Early Voting & Mail Voting Dates

Wednesday, December 20: First day for to apply for a ballot by mail, ballots will not begin to be mailed until after February 8

Friday, February 2: Military & overseas ballots available

Thursday, February 8: Statutory start of Early Voting

Tuesday, February 20: Voter registration closes for deputy registrars and local election officials

Wednesday, February 21 – Monday, March 19: Grace period registration & voting

Sunday, March 4: Online voter registration closes

Monday, March 5 – Monday, March 19: Early Voting period

Thursday, March 15: Last day to apply for a ballot by mail

Friday, March 16 – Sunday, March 18: Nursing home voting

Important Dates for the November 6, 2018 General Election

Candidate Filing Dates & Deadlines

Tuesday, March 27: First day to circulate petitions for independent candidates, new party candidates and nonpartisan candidates.

Monday, June 4: Last day for appointee by established managing committee to file documents when no candidate was nominated at the Primary election.

Monday, June 11: Last day to file objections to a resolution to fill a vacancy when no candidate was nominated at the Primary election.

Monday, June 18 – Monday June 25: Candidate filing period for new political parties, independent candidates and nonpartisan candidates.

Monday, July 2: Last day for filing objections to nomination papers of candidates who filed during the June 18 – 25 filing period. Objections are filed with the election authority where the nomination papers were originally filed.

Friday, August 24: Last day to file withdrawal papers with the State Board of Elections.

Thursday, August 30: Last day to file withdrawal papers with the County Clerk.

Thursday, September 6: Last day to file a notarized declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate.


Referendum Question Deadlines

Monday, August 6: Last day for filing petitions for referenda for the submission of questions of public policy with the local election authority.

Monday, August 13: Last day to file objections to petitions for the submission of questions of public policy. Objections to petitions for local referenda are filed with the same office that has the original petitions.

Monday, August 20: Last day for local governing boards to adopt a resolution or ordinance to allow a binding public question to appear on the ballot.

Thursday, August 30: Last day for the circuit court clerk and the local election official to certify any question of public policy to the election authority. 


Voter Registration, Grace Period, Early Voting and Mail Voting Dates

Wednesday, August 8: First day to apply for a ballot by mail.

Tuesday, October 9: Voter registration closes for deputy registrars and local election officials.

Wednesday, October 10 – Monday, November 5: Grace period registration and voting.

Sunday, October 21: Online voter registration closes.

Monday, October 22 – Monday, November 5: Early voting sites open.

Thursday, November 1: Last day to apply for a ballot by mail.

Friday, November 2 – Sunday, November 6: Nursing home voting.


Ballot Counting & Canvassing Results Dates

Tuesday, November 20: Deadline for validating and counting provisional ballots and late-arriving mail ballots.

Tuesday, November 27: Last day for County Clerk to canvass election results and proclaim results.
