Candidate's Guide

Statement of Economic Interests

Any Statement of Economic Interests form provided by and filed with the Cook County Clerk's office discloses the information required by law and will meet the statutory filing requirement for candidates.

Candidates can print out the Statement of Economic Interests form below and deliver it to the Clerk's downtown office (69 W. Washington, Fifth Floor, Chicago, IL 60602) or any of the Clerk's suburban courthouse office locations (Rolling Meadows, Skokie, Bridgeview, Maywood and Markham).

Please complete the Candidate Contact Form and file with your nomination papers or email the form to colleen.gleason@cookcountyil.gov. Do NOT bind with the nomination papers.

Candidate Filing

The candidate filing period for new political parties, independent candidates and nonpartisan candidates will take place Monday, June 20 - Monday, June 27.Click here for further information and frequently asked questions on candidate filing.

Withdrawal of Candidacy

To withdraw your candidacy, please complete the Withdrawal of Candidacy form, have it notarized, and file it with the office where you submitted your original nominating petitions. If you filed your petitions with the Cook County Clerk's office, you should deliver or mail your form to the Clerk's downtown office: 69 W. Washington, Fifth Floor, Chicago, IL 60602. Emails and faxes are not accepted.


Important Dates for the November 8, 2016 Presidential General Election

Candidate Filing Dates & Deadlines

Tuesday, March 29:  First day to circulate petitions for independent candidates, new party candidates and nonpartisan candidates.

Tuesday, May 31:  Last day for appointee, by established managing committee to file documents when no candidate was nominated at the Primary election.

Tuesday, June 7: Last day to file objections to a resolution to fill a vacancy when no candidate was nominated at the Primary election.

Monday, June 20 – Monday, June 27:  Petition filing period for independent candidates, new party candidates and nonpartisan candidates (sanitary district trustees)

Tuesday, July 5: Last day for filing objections to nomination papers of candidates who filed during the June 20 – June 27 filing period.
    - Last day to file withdrawal papers (incompatible offices).

Wednesday, July 6: Last day to conduct lottery for ballot placement.

Friday, August 26: Last day to file withdrawal papers with the State Board of Elections.

Thursday, September 1: Last day to file withdrawal papers with the County Clerk.

Thursday, September 8: Last day to file a notarized declaration of intent to be a write–in candidate (5 p.m.).

Referenda Question Deadlines

Monday, August 8: Last day for filing petitions for referenda for the submission of questions of public policy with the local election authority.

Monday, August 15: Last day to file objections to petitions for the submission of questions of public policy with the local election authority (file where petitions were filed).

Monday, August 22: Last day for local governing boards to adopt a resolution or ordinance to allow a binding public question to appear on the ballot

Ballot Certification Deadlines

Friday, August 26: Certification of Ballot by the State Board of Elections (candidates & referendum)

Wednesday, August 31:  Certification of Ballot to the City of Chicago (candidates)

Thursday, September 1: Certification of Ballot to the City of Chicago (referenda)
   - Certification of referenda by local election officials & circuit court clerk

Voter Registration, Early Voting & Mail Voting

Wednesday, August 10: First day for to apply for a ballot by mail, ballots will not begin to be mailed until after September 29.

Friday, September 23: Military & overseas ballots available

Thursday, September 29:  Statutory start of Early Voting

Tuesday, October 11: Last day to register to vote by paper application.

Sunday, October 23: Last day to register to vote by online application, after this date one must register and vote at a grace period site.

Wednesday, October 12 – Monday, November 7: Grace period registration & voting

Monday, October 24 – Monday, November 7: Early Voting period

Thursday, November 3: Last day to apply for a ballot by mail

Friday, November 4 – Sunday, November 6: Nursing home voting period
